Limescale in Costa del Sol bathrooms: how to remove it safely
White crust on taps, glass and showerheads? How to remove limescale from Marbella bathrooms without damaging marble, brass or glass, and keep it from returning.

Why the white crust keeps coming back
Tap water along much of the Spanish coast carries a fair amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When a drop dries on glass, chrome or tile, the water evaporates and the minerals stay behind as a white, chalky film: limescale.
Left alone, thin film becomes a hard crust that is far harder to remove, and it dulls shower screens, clogs showerhead nozzles and shortens the life of taps.
Acid works, but not on everything
Limescale dissolves in mild acids such as white vinegar or citric acid. For taps, showerheads and glass, a cloth or paper towel soaked in diluted vinegar and left on for 15 to 30 minutes will usually soften the deposit enough to wipe away.
Never use vinegar, lemon or any limescale remover on marble, travertine, limestone or other natural stone. Acid etches the surface and leaves dull marks that cannot be wiped off. Be careful too with brass, gilded or coloured finishes, grout in poor condition and rubber seals: test a small hidden spot first and rinse thoroughly.
Showerheads, glass and taps step by step
For a showerhead, soak it in a bag or bowl of warm diluted vinegar for half an hour, then rub the nozzles gently with a soft brush or your fingertips and rinse. Use a soft cloth on glass, never a scouring pad, which leaves scratches that collect even more residue.
For taps, wrap a soaked cloth around the base and spout, wait, then polish dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Drying is the step that makes the shine last.
Stopping it from coming back
The simplest habit is a squeegee: drawing it down the glass after each shower takes ten seconds and removes the water before it can dry. A quick wipe of taps and the basin edge does the same.
A weekly light clean with a mild descaling product, rather than a monthly battle with a thick crust, keeps surfaces easy to look after. In homes that are empty for weeks, run the taps and showers briefly on return and wipe dry.
When we can help
Bathrooms are a core part of every Lavanda clean, and we use products suited to each surface so natural stone and delicate finishes are never treated like plain tile.
If a bathroom needs more than a routine visit, tell us when you book and we can plan extra time for a deeper descale.
