Why a fridge needs more than a wipe
A fridge is one of the few places in the kitchen where food, moisture and warmth meet every day. Small spills under a shelf, a forgotten jar or a damp door seal are enough to cause smells, and in a humid coastal home mould on the rubber seals appears more easily than people expect.
Late autumn is a good moment for a proper clean: the fridge is about to fill up for the Christmas season, and a clean start makes it easier to spot what is really in there.
Empty, unplug and sort
Take everything out and check dates as you go. Keep chilled food in a cool bag or box while you work, and do not leave it out longer than necessary. Unplug the fridge, or switch it off at the control, so the surfaces are not freezing cold while you clean.
Remove the shelves, drawers and any removable door bins. Let glass shelves reach room temperature before washing them in warm water: very cold glass can crack if it meets hot water.
Clean the inside gently
Wash shelves and drawers by hand with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid, then rinse and dry. Wipe the inside walls with a cloth wrung out in warm water with a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda, which helps with smells and is gentle on plastic. Avoid strong bleach, abrasive pads and heavily scented sprays, because they can leave residues and odours that transfer to food.
Do not forget the drain hole at the back of the fridge compartment: if it is blocked, water collects at the bottom. Clear it carefully with a cotton bud or a thin soft tool, and check your manual for how your model handles it.
Seals, freezer and the back of the appliance
The door seals are where dirt and mould hide in the folds. Clean them with a soft brush or cotton bud dipped in warm soapy water, dry them well, and check that they are still flexible and close firmly. A seal that no longer closes properly makes the appliance work harder.
For the freezer, defrost it if ice has built up, using towels to catch the water and never a knife or sharp tool to chip ice, which can damage the lining. Once a year, pull the fridge out if you can do so safely and vacuum the dust from the back and the area underneath, as dusty coils make it harder for the appliance to keep cool in a hot Spanish summer.
Dry, restock and keep it fresh
Dry everything before you switch the fridge back on and allow it to cool before putting food back. Put the most perishable items on the shelves where it is coldest, and keep raw meat and fish on the lowest shelf in a covered container.
A quick wipe of spills each week, and a full clean every two or three months, keeps smells away. If you look after a villa or a holiday home, empty the fridge completely before you leave for a long stay and leave the door slightly ajar, so mould does not build up while you are away. At Lavanda we include appliances in our kitchen deep cleans when you ask for it, using gentle, natural products.
