Why marble needs gentle care
Marble is a natural stone made largely of calcium carbonate, which reacts to acids. Lemon, vinegar, many bathroom descalers and even some all-purpose sprays can leave dull, etched patches that no amount of scrubbing removes.
It is also softer than many people expect, so fine grit dragged across the surface slowly scratches the polish. On the Costa del Sol, sand and dust blown in from terraces and gardens are the everyday culprits.
A simple routine that works
Dust-mop or vacuum with a soft floor head first, so grit is lifted rather than pushed around. Then mop with a well-wrung microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone, using little water and changing it often.
Dry the floor afterwards with a clean microfibre cloth. Standing water and cleaner residue are what leave streaks and a cloudy film on polished marble.
Spills, stains and what to avoid
Blot spills straight away instead of wiping, especially wine, coffee, oil and cosmetics, which can be absorbed by the stone. Use coasters and trays on marble worktops and tables.
Avoid bleach, acidic descalers, abrasive powders and steam mops. Put a good doormat at every entrance to the terrace and pool area, and felt pads under furniture.
