Strong sun, salty sea air and Saharan dust are hard on paint, leather and glass. Practical habits to keep a luxury car in top condition on the Costa del Sol.

What the coast does to a car
Living by the sea means a car faces three things at once: strong UV light, fine salt carried in the air, and the occasional layer of Saharan dust. Each one is harmless in a day and damaging over years.
UV light dulls paint and dries out leather and dashboard plastics. Salt encourages corrosion wherever paint is chipped or the underside is exposed. Dust is slightly abrasive, so wiping it off dry leaves fine scratches.
Wash gently and often enough
A regular wash matters more near the coast than inland, because salt sits on the surface and keeps working. Rinse the car thoroughly first so loose dust and grit are lifted off rather than dragged across the paint.
Use a pH-neutral car shampoo, clean microfibre mitts and the two-bucket method: one bucket for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt. Avoid washing in direct midday sun, because water and soap dry into spots before you can rinse.
Protect the paint
A layer of wax, sealant or ceramic coating gives the paint a sacrificial barrier against UV and salt and makes dirt easier to remove. Which product suits your car depends on the paint and how you use it, so ask a professional you trust rather than choosing by promises on the label.
Whatever you choose, check the underside and wheel arches from time to time, as these are the places where salt does its quiet damage.
Look after the interior
Heat is hardest on leather, which can dry and crack. Clean it with a product made for automotive leather, then condition it a few times a year. A windscreen sunshade and, where possible, shade or a garage keep the cabin far cooler.
Vacuum seats and carpets regularly, as sand and dust wear fabric and leather from the inside. Wipe screens and glossy trim with a soft microfibre cloth only.
