Why rain is not a free car wash

After weeks of dry weather the first autumn storms often arrive carrying Saharan dust, so what lands on the car is muddy water rather than clean rain. As it dries in the sun, it leaves a film and rings of mineral spots on paint and glass.

Left for weeks, those spots can etch into the clear coat and become hard to remove without polishing. A quick, gentle wash soon after the rain is much kinder to the paint than a deep correction later.

Rinse first, then wash

Mud and grit are the real enemy. Rinse the whole car with plenty of water before touching it, starting with the roof and working down, so the loose dirt runs off instead of being dragged across the paint.

Then wash with a car shampoo and a clean wash mitt, using two buckets if you can: one for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt. Do the wheels and lower panels last, since they carry the most dirt.

Dry it, do not let the sun do it

Drying in direct sun is what fixes mineral spots onto the paint. Wash in the shade or early in the morning, and dry straight away with a soft, clean microfibre towel.

Do not forget the places where water hides: door shuts, mirrors, the edges of the boot and the fuel flap. They drip later and leave streaks on a car you thought was finished.

Wipers, glass and seals

Worn wiper blades smear dirty rain across the windscreen, which is a real problem at night on wet coastal roads. If they chatter or leave streaks, replace them before the rainy weeks, and wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth.

Clean the glass inside and out, and wipe the door and boot rubber seals so grit does not sit in them. A little rubber-safe conditioner keeps seals supple.

Protection that makes the next wash easier

A wax, sealant or ceramic coating gives rain something to run off rather than cling to, and it also helps against the sun and sea salt later. Whichever you choose, it works best on clean paint and needs topping up as it wears.
