Windows and glass near the sea: how to remove salt film in Marbella

Sea salt, dust and rain leave a cloudy film on glass in coastal homes. How to clean windows, sliding doors and balcony glass safely without scratching.

A bright, airy interior with large windows on a grey autumn day

Why glass clouds over so quickly by the coast

Sea air carries fine salt that settles on every outside surface. Add dust, pollen and the occasional calima, and the first autumn rains, and glass ends up with a grey, cloudy film that streaks as soon as you wipe it.

Homes close to the beach, and anything with large sliding doors or a glass balcony, show it first. The film is thin, but left alone it keeps building up and gets harder to remove.

Never wipe dry glass

Salt and grit are abrasive. Rubbing a dry or barely damp cloth across the pane drags those particles over the surface and can leave fine scratches, which are permanent.

Start by rinsing or wetting the glass generously with clean water so the loose dirt floats off. Only then use a little neutral glass cleaner or a drop of mild washing-up liquid in water.

A method that avoids streaks

Work from top to bottom with a clean microfibre cloth or a squeegee, wiping the blade after each pass. Finish with a dry, lint-free cloth along the edges where water collects.

Avoid cleaning in direct midday sun, because the product dries before you can wipe it and leaves marks. An overcast morning is ideal, and a cloudy autumn day is perfect.

Frames, tracks and balcony glass

Aluminium frames and sliding-door tracks collect salt and sand. Vacuum the tracks first, then wipe with a damp cloth, and don't use abrasive pads on anodised or lacquered aluminium.

Wipe the frames and rubber seals at the same time. Glass balustrades are worth a gentle rinse more often than interior windows, because they take the full weight of the salt-laden wind.

What to leave to a professional

Upper-floor windows, large fixed panes and glass you can only reach by leaning out are a job for people with the right equipment. Don't take risks on a ladder or a balcony ledge for the sake of a clean pane.
