Hotel-quality bed linen at home: washing, drying, ironing

Crisp, fresh bed linen in a humid coastal climate: how to wash, dry, iron and store cotton sheets so they stay soft, white and free of musty smells.

Start with the fabric, not the programme

Good bed linen is mostly about the cotton. Percale feels crisp and cool, sateen is smoother and slightly warmer, and linen softens with every wash. Check the care label first: most cotton sheets are happy at 40 to 60 degrees, while linen and sateen prefer the lower end.

Wash sheets on their own, or with towels only if the load is small. Overloading the drum is the most common reason sheets come out creased, grey or still faintly damp-smelling, because the water and detergent cannot move through the fabric.

Detergent, softener and hard water

On the Costa del Sol the water is hard, so too little detergent leaves sheets stiff and dull, while too much leaves residue that holds odours. Follow the dosage for hard water on the pack, and add a rinse if the cycle allows.

Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces how well cotton breathes, which is the opposite of what you want in a warm bedroom. A small cup of white vinegar in the softener drawer is a gentler option for softness. Keep it away from rubber seals if your machine's manual advises against it.

Drying without the musty smell

Sun and breeze are ideal for most of the year, and sunlight also brightens white cotton naturally. In the damp months, hang sheets in a ventilated room rather than a closed one, and never fold them away until they are completely dry.

If you use a tumble dryer, take sheets out while still very slightly damp and shake them out. That is the moment to smooth or iron them, and it prevents the stiff, over-dried feel.

Ironing and folding the way hotels do

Iron cotton while it is slightly damp, on a high heat, working on the reverse side for any embroidery. Start with the edges and borders, then the centre. Linen can be ironed damp too, or left softly creased if you prefer a relaxed look.

Fold sheets into a neat pack and store the full set, with its pillowcases, inside one of the pillowcases. It keeps the set together and makes making the bed quicker.

Storing linen in a humid climate

Store linen in a cupboard that breathes, away from exterior walls, with a little space between stacks. Avoid sealed plastic for long periods, as trapped moisture leads to a musty smell. A small sachet of dried lavender is a pleasant, natural touch.

In a holiday rental or a villa with many beds, laundering and ironing a full changeover is hours of work. Lavanda can take care of linen as part of a regular home or turnover service, so beds are fresh and ready.
