Storing leather handbags and shoes in a damp Spanish winter
Leather bags and shoes can bloom with mould in a humid coastal wardrobe. How to clean, dry and store them properly on the Costa del Sol this winter.

Why leather suffers on the coast
Leather is a natural material, and in the damp months it absorbs moisture from the air. A wardrobe on an outside wall, or one that stays closed for weeks, is exactly where it happens.
The first sign is usually a faint musty smell, then a white or greenish bloom on the surface or the lining. Catching it early makes all the difference.
Let leather breathe before you put it away
After wearing shoes or carrying a bag, leave them out in a ventilated room for a day so any moisture from your hands, feet or the rain can escape. Never dry leather on a radiator or in direct sun, as heat makes it crack.
Remove everything from the bag and open all pockets. Stuff the inside with acid-free paper or a clean cotton cloth so it keeps its shape without trapping damp.
Store it in the right way
Cotton dust bags and cloth shoe bags are better than plastic, which holds moisture against the leather. Leave a little space between items so air can move, and avoid the floor of the wardrobe and the back wall, where damp gathers first.
A small moisture absorber or silica sachets in the wardrobe help, but replace or dry them as the manufacturer says. Open the doors for a few minutes on dry days.
If you spot mould
Take the item outside or to a well-ventilated room and brush off the surface mould gently with a soft dry brush. Wipe with a cloth barely dampened in a mix of water and a little white vinegar, test first on a hidden spot, then dry it naturally away from heat.
Once dry, a suitable leather conditioner restores some of the oils. For suede, delicate or very valuable pieces, ask a specialist repairer rather than trying to fix it yourself.
Keep the wardrobe itself clean
Mould spores settle on shelves and rails too, so empty the wardrobe a few times a year, wipe the inside with a damp cloth, and let it dry completely before refilling.
If you spend part of the year away, our team can air and wipe wardrobes and check for early signs of damp as part of a regular home visit. It is a quiet job that protects things you would hate to lose.
