Sponges, cloths and mops: keeping them clean in a humid home
In a damp coastal home, sponges and mops can spread more germs than they remove. How to wash, dry and replace your cleaning tools on the Costa del Sol.

Why your cleaning tools get dirty first
A damp sponge or mop head that stays wet for hours is an ideal place for bacteria and mould to grow. In winter on the coast, when indoor humidity stays high and things take far longer to dry, this happens faster than most people expect.
The giveaway is a sour or musty smell. If your cloth smells after being used, it is no longer cleaning: it is spreading what it picked up.
Kitchen sponges and dishcloths
Rinse the sponge thoroughly after each use, squeeze it out and let it dry standing on its edge, not sitting in a puddle on the sink. Swap dishcloths for a fresh one every day or two, and wash used ones with your laundry.
Replace kitchen sponges often, every week or two if they are in daily use, and straight away if they smell, fall apart or look slimy. Keep one sponge for dishes and a separate cloth for worktops, and never use the dish sponge on floors or bathroom surfaces.
Microfibre cloths
Microfibre works by trapping dirt in very fine fibres, so it needs a proper wash. Machine wash at 40 to 60 degrees with a little detergent, and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and stops them picking up dirt. Check the care label first.
Dry them fully before storing, ideally in the open air or near a window. Keep cloths for the kitchen, the bathroom and the floors separate, so nothing travels from one room to another.
Mops, buckets and brushes
After mopping, empty the bucket, rinse it and leave it upside down. Wash the mop head after each use, or after each room in a bathroom, and hang it up to dry rather than leaving it standing in the bucket or in a damp cupboard.
Toilet brushes and scrubbing brushes need a rinse and a dry spot too. Replace tools when bristles bend or the mop head stays grey after washing.
How Lavanda handles it
We bring our own colour-separated cloths and tools, wash them between visits and replace them regularly, so your home is cleaned with fresh equipment rather than the leftovers of another room. If you would like us to use your own products or tools, just tell us when you book.
