Why cars get damp after the first autumn rains
After a dry summer, the first heavy rains bring wet shoes, umbrellas and sometimes a forgotten window or sunroof left slightly open. The carpet and the foam beneath it hold water for a long time, and in humid coastal air they do not dry on their own.
A musty smell is usually the first sign. It means moisture is trapped somewhere, and it is much easier to deal with in the first days than after weeks of damp.
Find where the water is coming from
Press a dry cloth firmly into the carpet in each footwell and under the rear seats, and check the boot floor and the spare-wheel area. Cold, wet spots that stay wet tell you where to focus.
If the same spot is damp again after drying, the water may be entering through a door seal, a blocked sunroof drain or the air-conditioning drain. That is a job for a workshop rather than a cleaning product, so it is worth checking before you spend time on the carpets.
Drying the carpets properly
Take out the removable mats and dry them fully in the shade, not in strong sun, which can warp rubber and fade fabric. Soak up as much water as you can from the fitted carpet with towels or a wet-and-dry vacuum, pressing rather than rubbing.
Then keep air moving: park somewhere dry, open the doors for a few hours on a dry day, and run the heating with the air conditioning on, which dries the cabin air. A moisture absorber in the footwell helps between sessions. Do not leave wet mats back in the car until they are completely dry.
Removing the smell without masking it
Air fresheners only cover a musty smell. Once the carpet is dry, a gentle fabric cleaner suited to car interiors, applied sparingly and tested on a hidden corner first, removes the residue the smell comes from. Avoid soaking the carpet, because adding water is the opposite of what you want.
Never mix products, and keep the doors open while you work. Leather, wood trim and electronics under the seats need special care, so keep liquids away from them.
Habits that keep the cabin dry in winter
Shake out umbrellas and wipe wet shoes before getting in, use rubber mats that you can lift out and dry, and empty any standing water from them. Check that the sunroof and windows are fully closed whenever rain is forecast.
Every few weeks in winter, lift the mats and feel the carpet beneath. Catching damp early is the simplest way to avoid mould and a smell that is hard to remove.
