How to clean TVs, screens and electronics without damage

Safe ways to clean TVs, laptops, phones and remotes at home on the Costa del Sol: what to use, what to avoid and how to deal with dust and salty air.

Why screens need a gentler hand

Modern TV and monitor screens have delicate coatings, and many are only a thin layer of plastic. Glass cleaner, kitchen sprays, alcohol-heavy wipes and rough cloths can leave clouding, streaks or permanent marks.

Always switch the device off and unplug it first, and let it cool. A dark screen shows dust and fingerprints clearly, so you can see what you are doing.

The safe method for TVs and monitors

Start dry: wipe gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, using light, straight strokes and very little pressure. This removes most of the dust and often all of the marks.

For stubborn smears, slightly dampen a separate microfibre cloth with plain water, or water mixed with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, wring it out thoroughly and wipe. Never spray liquid directly onto the screen, because it can run behind the frame. Check the manufacturer's guidance for your model, as some advise against any moisture.

Phones, laptops, keyboards and remotes

These are the items most handled and least cleaned. For phones and tablets, a barely damp microfibre cloth works well on the screen and case; avoid letting moisture reach ports and speakers. Many manufacturers now say that disinfecting wipes are fine on hard surfaces, but check your device's own instructions first.

For keyboards, turn the laptop upside down and tap gently to loosen crumbs, then brush between the keys with a soft, dry brush. Remote controls, game controllers and light switches deserve a quick wipe with a lightly damp cloth, particularly in cold and flu season.

Dust, vents and cables

Dust is the main enemy of electronics, because it traps heat. Gently vacuum or brush the vents of the TV, games console, router and decoder with a soft brush attachment, with the devices switched off, and keep them away from closed cupboards that restrict airflow.

Behind the TV is where dust collects unseen. Unplug cables only if you know where each one goes, or photograph the back first, and dust the cable bundle with a dry cloth rather than moving everything.

Coastal air and empty homes

Close to the sea, salty humid air can corrode connectors over time. Keep devices away from open balcony doors, let air circulate, and in a house that will be empty for weeks, unplug what you do not need, which also reduces risk from power surges during storms.

In a villa or holiday rental, screens and remotes are touched by every guest, so they are worth including in each turnover clean. Lavanda wipes electronics with dry or barely damp microfibre and never sprays liquid onto them, so your equipment stays safe while the whole home feels fresh.
