Storage Room and Garage Clean: Beating Damp in Marbella
How to clear, clean and protect a trastero or garage from damp, mould and pests on the Costa del Sol, with a simple storage routine that lasts.

Why storage rooms suffer on the coast
A trastero (the storage room that comes with many Spanish apartments) or a garage is usually the least ventilated space you own. It often sits below ground, has no window and is opened only a few times a year. On the Costa del Sol, where winter air can stay humid for days, that is exactly the recipe for a musty smell, mould spots and damp cardboard.
Autumn is a good moment to deal with it: the summer heat has gone, but the wettest weeks are still ahead. An hour of sorting now can save boxes, suitcases and furniture over the winter.
Empty, sort and check before you clean
Take everything out, ideally on a dry, breezy day. Sort into keep, donate and discard as you go, and be honest about what has not been touched in two years. Fewer items also means better air movement, which is the real protection against damp.
With the room empty, look at the walls and floor in good light. A white or grey powder on the wall, dark patches near the floor, or a tide mark on boxes can point to moisture coming from outside rather than simple condensation. If you suspect a leak or rising damp, report it to the community administrator or a qualified professional; cleaning alone will not fix it.
Cleaning walls, floor and shelves
Start high and finish low: dust the ceiling corners and shelves with a dry microfibre cloth or a vacuum brush, then wash surfaces with a mild solution of warm water and a little neutral cleaner. For light mould on painted or concrete walls, wipe with a diluted white-vinegar solution or a mould cleaner suited to the surface, wear gloves and keep the door open. Never mix cleaning products with each other, and never mix bleach with vinegar.
Let everything dry completely before putting anything back. Leave the door open for several hours, and use a fan or dehumidifier if the room has power. Putting things back into a damp room simply brings the problem back with them.
Store things so damp cannot settle in
Swap cardboard for sealable plastic boxes, which keep out moisture and insects, and label them on the side. Raise boxes off the floor on shelves or pallets and leave a few centimetres between the stored items and the walls so air can pass. Keep textiles, books and paperwork in sealed boxes with moisture absorbers, and replace those absorbers when they are full.
Store heavy and valuable items at higher levels, away from the floor. Avoid keeping fuel, paint and solvents in a closed room, and check your community rules on what may be kept in garages and trasteros.
A small routine for the year
Open the door and ventilate for an hour once a month, and look for new smells, spots or insects. Check the moisture absorbers each season and wipe the floor now and then to stop dust turning into grime. If you use the space for a car or motorbike, a quick look at the tyres and battery on each visit is worthwhile too.
If you are away for most of the year, or simply would rather not spend a weekend in a basement, Lavanda can clear, clean and reorganise a garage or storage room as part of a deep clean. We will always tell you honestly if something looks like a damp problem that needs a specialist.
