Never mix cleaning products: a safety guide for your home

Bleach, ammonia and descalers can release dangerous fumes when combined. A clear guide to safer cleaning in a Spanish home, from Marbella.

Why mixing products is risky

Many of us grew up believing that two cleaners must work better than one. In reality, some common household products react with each other and release gases that irritate the eyes, throat and lungs, sometimes seriously.

The risk is higher in the small, closed spaces of a home: a bathroom with the window shut, a utility room, a laundry cupboard. In damp winter weather, when windows stay closed, fumes linger even longer.

The combinations to avoid

Bleach (lejía) with ammonia, bleach with an acid such as vinegar or a limescale remover, and bleach with another bleach-based or oven product should never meet. The first releases chloramine vapours, the second releases chlorine gas.

Be careful with limescale removers too: Costa del Sol water is hard, so descalers are common in bathrooms and kitchens, and many are strongly acidic. Rinse thoroughly with water before using anything else on the same surface.

Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar mixed in one bottle is another popular mistake, as it can form a corrosive acid. If you want to use both, apply them one after the other with a good rinse in between, never together.

Use one product at a time, and rinse in between

The simple rule: choose one product for the job, follow the label, then rinse the surface with clean water before trying anything else. Do not top up a half-empty bottle with a different product, and never reuse a bottle without its original label.

Read the dilution instructions too. More concentrated does not mean cleaner, and it can damage natural stone, marble, wood and seals while leaving residue that attracts dirt.

Ventilate, protect yourself and store safely

Open a window before you start, wear gloves, and keep children and pets out of the room until surfaces are dry and the smell has gone. Keep products in their original containers, upright, in a cool place away from the sun, and out of reach of children.

If you smell something sharp, cough or feel your eyes burning, leave the room at once and get fresh air. If symptoms persist or are serious, call 112 or the Servicio de Información Toxicológica on 91 562 04 20, the national poisons helpline.

Simpler is often better

For everyday cleaning, mild pH-neutral products and warm water with a microfibre cloth handle most surfaces. Reserve stronger products for specific jobs, such as limescale or mould, and use them on their own.

At Lavanda we clean with gentle, natural-leaning products and a small, clear set of tools, which also keeps your home free of strong smells. If you would like a team that handles products carefully, we are happy to talk.
