Leather car interiors on the Costa del Sol: heat and damp

Sun cooks leather in summer and damp invites mould in winter. How to clean and protect a luxury car interior in Marbella all year round.

Two seasons, two kinds of stress

A car parked on the coast has a hard life inside as well as out. In summer the cabin can get very hot under direct sun, which dries leather, fades dashboards and stiffens stitching over the years. In autumn and winter the problem reverses: damp air and wet clothes leave moisture in carpets and seats.

Autumn is a good moment to reset the interior: clean away the summer's sweat, sunscreen and dust, and prepare it for the humid months ahead.

Cleaning leather without damaging it

Start by vacuuming seams and perforations with a soft brush so grit does not scratch the surface as you wipe. Then use a pH-balanced leather cleaner on a soft microfibre cloth, never sprayed straight onto the seat, and work one panel at a time.

Avoid household sprays, strong degreasers and anything containing bleach or solvents. They can strip the protective finish and leave leather looking dull or feeling sticky. If your car has light or perforated leather, test any product on a hidden spot first and check the manufacturer's handbook.

Condition and protect

Once clean and dry, a quality leather conditioner replaces some of the moisture the sun has taken. Apply a thin layer and buff off the excess. More is not better: a heavy coat can feel greasy and attract dust.

Sunscreen, dark denim and hair products transfer onto seats more than people expect, so wipe light-coloured leather every few weeks. A windscreen sunshade and, where possible, shade or a covered space make the biggest difference of all in summer.

Keeping damp and smells out in winter

Wet umbrellas, damp towels and beach bags left in the boot are the usual culprits for musty smells. Take them out as soon as you can, and check the footwells and boot floor for dampness after heavy rain.

On a dry day, open the doors for a while to let the cabin air through. Fabric mats can be taken out and dried separately. If a smell keeps returning, there may be a water leak from a door seal or sunroof drain, and that is a job for a workshop rather than a cleaner.

When to call in professionals

For deep cleaning of leather, carpets and headlining, or for a car you want presented perfectly before a sale or a trip, a professional detail saves time and avoids costly mistakes with the wrong product.

Lavanda offers mobile car care alongside home cleaning, so we can look after your car at your villa or apartment. If you would like to talk it through, get in touch and we will happily advise.
