Why bedrooms suffer near the sea
Coastal air carries moisture all year, and in autumn and winter, when windows stay closed and the sun is weaker, bedrooms can hold on to it. A mattress sits against a bed base for hours with little air movement, which is exactly where dampness and musty smells settle.
The first signs are usually small: a stale smell when you open a wardrobe, a slightly clammy feel to bedding, or dark spots in a corner behind the headboard.
Air the room and the bed every day
Open the windows for ten to fifteen minutes every morning, even when it is cool. Moving air does more than any product. Before you make the bed, fold the covers back so the mattress can breathe for a while.
Keep furniture a few centimetres away from external walls, which are the coldest and dampest surfaces. A bed pushed hard against a wall gives moisture nowhere to go.
Freshen the mattress safely
Vacuum the mattress surface and seams every month or two using the upholstery attachment. Sprinkle a thin layer of bicarbonate of soda, leave it for an hour or two, and vacuum it up again to lift odours. Do not soak a mattress: liquid that goes deep is slow to dry and can cause the very problem you are trying to avoid.
Turn the mattress as the manufacturer recommends, and use a washable protector so spills and sweat never reach the filling. Pillows and duvets should be washed according to their care labels and dried completely before they go back on the bed.
Walls, wardrobes and floors
Wipe any early surface mould on walls with a cloth and a diluted vinegar or mild soap solution, then dry the area well and improve ventilation. If the marks keep returning or spread, the cause is usually a leak or a cold spot that needs a specialist rather than more cleaning.
Leave wardrobe doors slightly open from time to time, avoid packing clothes tightly, and vacuum under the bed, where dust gathers fastest.
A full bedroom reset
A bedroom deep clean covers all of this in one visit: vacuuming under and around the bed, wiping skirting boards, wardrobes and bedside tables, and changing linen if you ask us to. It is a good thing to schedule before the winter months, or before guests arrive.
If you are away for part of the year, Lavanda can air and refresh the property so you return to a room that feels clean and dry.
