How to Clean Chandeliers and Crystal Lighting at Home
Safe, step-by-step advice for cleaning chandeliers, crystal and glass light fittings in a coastal villa, without streaks, damage or electrical risk.

Why chandeliers need more care near the coast
A chandelier collects dust like any shelf, but on the Costa del Sol it also catches fine sea-salt air, cooking vapour and the occasional layer of calima dust. Together they leave crystal looking cloudy, and the light it throws loses its sparkle.
Most owners only notice when a fitting is lit at night and the glass looks dull. A gentle clean once or twice a year, and a quick dusting in between, keeps it bright.
Before you touch anything: safety first
Switch the lights off at the wall and at the fuse board, and let the bulbs cool completely. Never spray liquid onto a fitting that is connected to the mains, and keep water away from sockets, wiring and bulb holders.
Use a stable step ladder with someone holding it, especially in a double-height entrance hall. If the chandelier is very large, very old or hangs from a high ceiling, it is safer to ask a professional than to stretch from a ladder.
Dusting and cleaning crystal without streaks
Start from the top and work down with a soft, clean microfibre cloth or a feather duster, so dust falls onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet. Wear clean cotton or nitrile gloves: fingerprints show badly on crystal.
For a deeper clean, wipe each piece with a cloth lightly dampened in lukewarm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then buff dry straight away with a lint-free cloth. Always dry thoroughly, as water left on the metal parts can mark them over time.
Brass, gilt and delicate finishes
Many chandeliers combine crystal with brass, gilt or painted metal. Dust these with a dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners, which can strip the finish. Test any product on a hidden spot first.
Vintage or antique pieces, such as Murano glass or old gilded frames, deserve extra caution. If you are unsure of the material, dust only, and ask a specialist before using any liquid.
Keeping lighting sparkling all year
A light dusting every few weeks, with a microfibre cloth or a soft brush, prevents the build-up that makes deep cleaning a chore. Wall lights, glass lampshades and recessed spotlights deserve the same quick pass.
If you would rather not climb ladders, Lavanda can include delicate lighting in a regular or deep clean of your home, handled carefully and by hand. Tell us what you have and how you like it looked after, and we will plan it with you.
