Why a fireplace needs attention in autumn
On the coast a fireplace may sit unused for most of the year. Humidity settles in the firebox and chimney, dust collects on the hearth, and the first fire of the season can fill the room with a stale, smoky smell.
A little preparation in October or November makes the first evening by the fire far more pleasant.
Ash and the firebox: always cold, always careful
Only clean when the fireplace has been cold for at least a day. Ash can hold hot embers for far longer than you would expect, so use a metal container with a lid, never a plastic bin or a vacuum cleaner not designed for ash.
Leave a thin layer of ash in a wood burner if the manufacturer advises it, but remove old, damp ash: it holds moisture against the metal and brings the smell back.
Soot on glass, stone and hearth
For the glass door of a wood burner, a damp cloth dipped in a little cold ash, or a cleaner made for stove glass, lifts soot without scratching. Rinse and dry well, and test a small corner first.
Natural stone and marble around the fireplace are sensitive: acidic cleaners such as vinegar or lime removers can etch them. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth, and never scrub dry soot, which smears into the pores. Brick and rough stone respond better to a soft brush and a vacuum with a fine filter.
The chimney itself is a job for a specialist
Sweeping the flue and checking for blockages, nests or damage is work for a qualified chimney sweep, ideally before the first fire of the season and again if you use it often. It is also a good moment to ask them to check the draught and the cap.
Cleaning around the fireplace afterwards is much easier, because the dust and soot they loosen is dealt with in one go.
The finishing touches, and how we can help
Wipe the mantel, dust the books and cushions nearby, and wash or air any rugs close to the hearth. A bowl of dried lavender or a window opened for ten minutes helps clear the closed-up smell.
If you would rather have the room ready for the first cold evening, a Lavanda clean can include the surfaces and floors around the fireplace. Tell us about the stone or finish when you book, so we use the right products.
