Sofa and upholstery care in a Costa del Sol home

Sun, salt air, sunscreen and humidity all age sofas fast. How to vacuum, spot-clean and protect fabric, linen and leather upholstery on the Costa del Sol.

Why sofas age faster by the sea

A sofa on the coast deals with more than everyday use. Strong sun fades fabric near windows, sea air carries fine salt and dust that settle into the weave, and sunscreen and body oil from the summer leave marks on arms and headrests.

Autumn is a good moment to deal with all of it. The windows are open less, the guests have gone home and the sofa is about to be used more as evenings get longer.

Start with a proper vacuum

Most of what looks like stains is dry dust and grit, and grit wears fabric down like fine sandpaper. Use a soft brush attachment and go slowly over seams, under the cushions and along the back, where crumbs and sand collect.

Turn and plump the cushions every week or two so they wear evenly and the sun does not fade only one side.

Spot-cleaning without making it worse

Check the care label first. Codes vary by manufacturer, and a cleaning method that suits one fabric can leave a ring on another. Test any product on a hidden corner and wait for it to dry before going further.

Blot a spill, never rub it, working from the edge towards the centre. For most water-safe fabrics, a little mild soap in lukewarm water on a barely damp cloth is enough. Avoid soaking the cushion, because damp foam dries slowly in a humid home and can smell afterwards.

Leather, linen and removable covers

Leather dislikes both direct sun and dry air from air conditioning. Keep it out of strong light, wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and use a conditioner made for leather once or twice a year rather than household sprays. In humid months, make sure air can move around it so mould does not start on the underside.

Linen and cotton covers are forgiving, but many shrink in a hot wash, so follow the label. Put covers back on while still very slightly damp, as the fabric settles into shape, and let them finish drying fully.

When to call a professional

Old stains, pet smells, delicate silk or velvet and large sofas are usually better left to someone with the right equipment and experience. A mistake on upholstery is hard to reverse.
