Why towels go stiff on the Costa del Sol
Water in much of southern Spain is hard, which means it carries a lot of dissolved minerals. Wash after wash, those minerals and leftover detergent build up in the cotton loops, and towels end up rough, greyish and less absorbent.
Liquid fabric softener makes it worse. It coats the fibres with a film that stops them drinking water, so towels feel soft for a moment and then dry you badly.
A wash routine that keeps cotton soft
Use less detergent than the label suggests: overloading the drum with soap is the most common cause of stiff towels. Wash them in a not-too-full machine, with enough room to move, and add a laundry product designed to bind minerals if your machine has no built-in softening.
Once every month or two, run a hot wash with no softener and a cup of white vinegar in the softener drawer to help release the build-up. Do not mix vinegar with bleach, and check the care label first, as not every towel or machine takes high temperatures.
Drying without ruining the loops
Shake each towel out before it goes on the line or into the dryer so the loops stand up. Hanging them in the Andalusian sun dries them quickly and freshens them naturally, though very strong sun can fade dark colours, so turn those inside out.
In a dryer, use a medium heat and take them out while they are barely dry. Over-drying makes cotton brittle, and wool dryer balls help keep the fibres fluffy without any film.
Storing towels in a humid home
A damp towel folded into a closed cupboard quickly smells musty, especially near the coast in winter. Make sure towels are completely dry before folding, and leave a little space between stacks so air can move.
In a second home that stands empty, store a spare set in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, and wash them again before the first use.
Towels for guests and holiday rentals
Towels in a rental take a lot of washing, so rotate sets and replace any that have turned thin or grey: guests notice towels more than most details. White cotton in a good weight is easy to keep fresh at high temperatures.
Lavanda can look after linen and towels as part of a regular clean or a turnover, so your home or rental is ready when guests arrive. Tell us how you like things done and we will plan it with you.
